Medical Emergency
Every second counts in a medical emergency.
You must remain calm to assess the situation and act accordingly. At the very least,
you should remember the 3Cs: check the scene, call for emergency services, and care
for the patient until help arrives.
AEDs and Safe Stations are located around campus. Call AU Police at 706-721-2911 or
911 for life-threatening situations.
What to do
- Check for scene safety. Only move a victim if there is danger. Do not try to address the hazard.
- Stay calm: Take a deep breath to help you think clearly.
- Do not move the person: Have them stay put unless they are in immediate danger (such as a fire or in the path
of traffic). Moving someone with a potential neck or spinal injury could cause further
harm.
- Send someone to meet first responders at the entrance to guide them to your location quickly.
- Provide first aid: But only to the level of your training. Do not attempt to do more than you are qualified
for. The 911 or police dispatcher can provide guidance for certain situations.
- Keep the person comfortable by loosening any tight clothing, such as a collar or tie.
- Talk to the person to keep them awake and calm until help arrives.
