Drug Overdose

Narcan Administration | JagSafe

This resource provides the video guide on how to properly administer Narcan to assist in opioid overdose emergencies.

How to give NARCAN nasal spray for opioid overdose:

  1. Check for an opioid overdose: A person may be experiencing an overdose if they are unconscious or unresponsive, have slow or stopped breathing, have pinpoint pupils, or have blue or gray lips or fingertips.
  2. Call 911 immediately. Make sure to let the dispatcher know you suspect an overdose.
  3. Position the person on their back on a flat surface. Check that nothing is blocking their airway.
  4. Get the Narcan ready:
    • Remove the nasal spray from its box.
    • Do not test or prime the device.
    • Hold the device with your thumb on the bottom of the plunger and your index and middle fingers on either side of the nozzle.
  5. Insert the nozzle gently into one nostril. Support the back of the person's neck with your hand and tilt their head back slightly.
  6. Press the plunger firmly to deliver the full dose of spray into the nose. The device is for one-time use.
  7. Watch for a response. It may take them 2 to 3 minutes to respond. Signs of response include waking up or breathing normally.
  8. Give another dose if needed. If they do not respond after 2 or 3 minutes, give a second dose of Narcan in the other nostril.
  9. Place the person in the recovery position. Roll them onto their side to prevent them from choking if they vomit.
  10. Wait for emergency services to arrive, continue to monitor the person's breathing, and give additional doses if they stop responding.

Bleeding

Stop The Bleed

Focused on techniques to manage and control traumatic bleeding

You find a person who has an injury that is causing them to bleed excessively:

  1. Immediately call 911 for help or your local emergency number 706-721-2911.
  2. Find the bleed. Look for the source of the blood by exposing the wound.
  3. Press the wound firmly with both hands using a clean cloth, bandage, or piece of clothing.
    1. Push hard.
    2. Do not remove the cloth if it soaks through; add more cloth on top and keep pushing.
    3. Do not remove any object that is stuck in the wound; push firmly around it.
    4. Don’t stop until medical help arrives.

For very heavy bleeding on an arm or leg:

If the bleeding is severe and won't stop with pressure, you may need to apply a tourniquet to the limb.

    1. Wrap a strap or band (like a belt or shirt) tightly 2 to 3 inches above the wound.
    2. Tighten it by twisting a stick or rod inserted into the loop until the bleeding stops.
    3. DO NOT remove the tourniquet once it is on.

What else can you do:

  • For deep wounds, you can pack the wound with clean gauze or cloth before applying pressure.
  • Reassure the person and keep them warm with a jacket or other clothing to help prevent shock.
  • Have the person lie down, if possible, and elevate the bleeding arm or leg above their heart.

Unconscious Person

You come across a person who is unconscious, assess the person and situation as quickly as you can. For immediate help, call 911 or your local emergency number 706-721-2911.

Important Things to Avoid:

  • Do not give an unconscious person any food or drink
  • Do not slap them or splash water on them
  • Do not place a pillow under their head
  • Do not leave the person alone to look for help; keep the 911 operator on the phone with you.

First Steps:

  • Check the scene for danger. Before approaching, make sure there are no hazards such as fire, traffic, or electrical cables that could put you or the person at risk.
  • Check for responsiveness. Shout at the person and tap them on the shoulder. If they do not respond, call 911 immediately and put the phone on speaker.
  • Check for severe bleeding. Scan the person for any obvious, life-threatening bleeding. If you find any, apply direct pressure to the wound.
  • Do not move them unnecessarily.Unless the person is in immediate danger or you must move them to perform CPR, do not move them, especially if a neck or back injury is suspected.
  • Drug overdose? If you suspect or see evidence of a drug overdose, administer NARCAN.

Next Steps:

If the person is unconscious but breathing normally, place them in the recovery position to keep their airway open and prevent choking on fluids or vomiting. If you suspect a drug overdose, you will need to administer NARCAN.

Recovery position:

  1. Lie them flat on their back and straighten their legs.
  2. Place the arm nearest to you out at a right angle, palm facing up.
  3. Move their far arm across their chest and rest the back of their hand against their cheek (the one closest to you).
  4. Bend their far knee so the foot is flat on the ground.
  5. Gently roll them toward you by pulling the bent knee. Their arms will stop them from rolling too far.
  6. Tilt their head back slightly to keep the airway open. Their hand under the cheek will support the head.
  7. Keep checking their breathing until help arrives.

Person is NOT Breathing - Begin CPR

CPR For Adults

Instructional video for performing CPR on adults, providing vital life-saving steps for emergency situations

If the person is not breathing normally, begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) immediately.

How to Perform Hands-Only CPR:

(Recommended for those without formal training)

  1. Position the person on their back on a hard, flat surface.
  2. Kneel beside them at their chest.
  3. Place the heel of one hand on the center of the person's chest (the breastbone) and the other hand on top, interlocking your fingers.
  4. Use your upper body weight to push hard and fast, compressing the chest about 2 inches deep.
  5. Deliver compressions at a rate of 100 to 120 per minute, which is about the rhythm of the song "Stayin' Alive".
  6. Continue compressions without interruption until an automated external defibrillator (AED) arrives or emergency responders take over.
