Active Threat

In the event of an active shooter or hostile threat on campus, knowing how to respond quickly and effectively can save lives.

Situations like these happen rapidly and unpredictably, leaving little time to think or plan. Being familiar with emergency procedures鈥攕uch as when to run, hide, or fight empowers individuals to make informed decisions under pressure. Preparedness not only enhances personal safety but also protects others in the AU community.

Active Threat

What to do

Run (Avoid)

  • Leave belongings behind: If a safe escape path is available, evacuate the building and leave all your possessions.
  • Keep hands visible: When you encounter police, raise your hands and spread your fingers to show they are empty.
  • Follow officer commands: Follow all instructions from law enforcement. Do not stop to ask them for directions.
  • Call 911 when safe: Once you are in a secure location, call 911 to provide details on the shooter and the location.

Hide (Deny)

  • Secure your location: If you cannot safely evacuate, find a room to hide in. Lock the door and barricade it with heavy furniture.
  • Become invisible: Turn off all lights, close window blinds, and get everyone out of sight and away from doors and windows.
  • Silence all electronics: Turn off any device that can make noise or vibrate.
  • Remain quiet: Stay calm, quiet, and out of sight. Do not open the door for anyone until a verified "All Clear" message is issued.

Fight (Defend)

  • Attack as a last resort: Only attempt to fight if your life is in imminent danger and you have no other options for running or hiding.
  • Act aggressively: Disrupt and try to incapacitate the attacker. Yell, throw items, and use improvised weapons.
  • Work with others: If with a group, coordinate an attack together to overwhelm the assailant.
  • Commit completely: Attack with full aggression and do not stop until the attacker is neutralized.

Join us for ASHER training

In high-pressure situations, muscle memory is key. The ASHER program engages the community in proactive preparation using the RUN, HIDE, FIGHT framework. This training provides a clear roadmap for responding and staying safe during an active shooter situation.
