Pelvic Exams

Even today, women can feel embarrassed by the exposure associated with a pelvic exam. Some view a pelvic exam as an indignity to their bodies. Although understandable, it is important to overcome these feeling, because this is one of the most important examinations for your lifelong health and well-being.

Just as periodic examinations of your breasts can detect early lumps or thickening, the pelvic exam is a gynecological exam done to look for signs of cancer, infection, or abnormalities. Women should get one annually, since early detection is essential to head problems off before they become serious.

Pap Smears

Done primarily to detect pre-cancerous cells that are shed from the cervix, and for the detection of abnormal cells from other causes. Pap smears are performed as part of your pelvic exam. Find out more about Pap smear guidelines from .

Colposcopy and Biopsy

If you have an abnormal Pap smear, you may need to schedule a colposcopy appointment. Healthcare providers use a colposcope to magnify your cervix to check suspicious areas and, if necessary, perform a biopsy to pinch off a small sampling of tissue for further testing.

Getting Your Biopsy Results

When will I receive my biopsy results? The pathology report should be back within seven to ten business days. The healthcare provider will notify you when the results are available and schedule a time to discuss these results, whether in person or via telehealth, based on your preference.

Infection Treatments

Most women will experience some form of vaginitis during their life-time. The most effective way to prevent vaginitis is to understand its causes and follow advice to reduce your risk. SHS treats sexually and non-sexually transmitted vaginal infections, such as:

Student Health services offers a variety of contraception options, to include birth control pills, depoprovera, Nexplanon and intrauterine devices (IUDs).  Schedule an appointment today for a consultation to explore the best option for you. Counseling can be done in-person or via telehealth.
