Crisis Services

Emergency Appointments are available for students with imminent concerns.

Examples of crises may include:

  • Suicidal thoughts, intent, plan, and/or other risks of harm against one self

  • Homicidal thoughts, intent, plan, and/or other risks of harm against other(s)

  • Recent traumatic event (e.g., survivor of a crime or natural disaster; sexual and/or physical assault)

  • Recently experienced the loss of a loved one

  • Severe reaction to a psychiatric medication

  • Perceptual disturbances, such as hearing things or seeing things that others do not hear or see

  • Difficulty providing for one's own basic needs, such as housing, food, clothing, hygiene

  • Harassment, bullying, discrimination, and/or oppression

Counselors are available to meet with clients in crisis during open business hours. 

If you are a student experiencing an after-hour emergency, please call 9-8-8 or the 24/7 Support Line at 833-910-3364 for immediate assistance. These resources are available 24/7. GCAL through 988 also has access to a mobile crisis response unit that they can dispatch to any location at any time to provide in-person assistance. You can also call 9-1-1, and/or find safe transportation to the nearest emergency room/department.

PHONE/HOTLINES

  1. 24/7 Support Line at 833-910-3364 is available for immediate assistance.
  2. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline provides free and confidential emotional support to people in a suicidal crisis or emotional distress. By calling 1-800-273-TALK (8255) you will be connected to a skilled, trained counselor at crisis center in your area, anytime 24/7. Hearing-impaired TTY users may dial (800) 799-4889. Contacting the National Hopeline Network at 1-800-SUICIDE now routes to the same Lifeline.

  3. The 9-8-8 line is staffed with professional social workers and counselors 24 hours per day, seven days a week to assist those with urgent and emergency needs. Individuals in need of crisis management will receive mobile response to assess the situation, deescalate the crisis, consult, and refer, with post-crisis follow up to assure linkage with recommended services. Call 9-8-8.

  4. The Trevor Lifeline is the nation鈥檚 only around-the-clock crisis intervention and suicide prevention lifeline for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning youth. Call 1-866-488-7386. [Note: the lifeline will talk with any individual regardless of sexuality or gender.]

  5. The Boys Town National Hotline is an anonymous, free 24-hour helpline intended for pre-teens, teens, and young adults. If you are having thoughts of harming yourself or you are being abused, please call us at 1-800-448-3000. Counselors are ready for your call 24/7.

  6. The Rape, Abuse, Incest National Network (RAINN) is a free, confidential, and secure crisis hotline available 24/7 for victims of sexual assault or violence as well as their families and friends. Call 1-800-656-HOPE (4673).

  7. Vets4Warriors is for anyone currently serving in the military, veterans, and their families/caregivers. It is confidential and anonymous hotline available 24/7 to receive personalized peer support by a veteran. Call 1-855-838-8255.

  8. SAMHSA鈥檚 National Helpline: also known as, the Treatment Referral Routing Service, this Helpline provides 24-hour free and confidential treatment referral and information about mental and/or substance use disorders, prevention, and recovery in English and Spanish. Call 1-800-662-HELP (4357).

 

ONLINE CHAT

  1. The Lineline Crisis Chat is available through the National Suicide Prevention Lineline. The service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week within the United States and territories. .

  2. TrevorChat: a free, confidential, and secure online instant messaging service that provides live help by trained volunteers. Available 7 days a week 3PM-10PM. Visit to begin chatting.

  1. Boys Town National Hotline: chat over IM and get a live, to the minute discussion with one of our counselors. Available Monday-Friday, 6PM to midnight CST. Visit  and click on 鈥渟tart a chat鈥 to begin.

  1. The National Sexual Assault Online Hotline allows individuals to chat online with a trained staff member who can provide confidential crisis support. Visit and click 鈥済o chat鈥 to get started.

TEXT MESSAGING

  1. The Crisis Text Line serves anyone, in any type of crisis, providing access to free, 24/7 support and information via texting. Text START to 741-741 from anywhere in the USA, anytime, about any type of crisis. A live, trained crisis counseling volunteer receives the text and responds quickly.

  2. Trevor Text: text TREVOR to 1-202-304-1200 anytime Monday-Friday between 3PM-10PM.

  3. The Boys Town National Hotline is a texting service intended for pre-teens, teens, and young adults. Text with a counselor for free with the following carriers: AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, Virgin, Cricket, Nextel, Boost, MetroPCS. Text VOICE to 20121 any day between 2PM to 1AM CST. For more information about the service, text HELP to 20121.
