IST- External Programs

Ready to take your education to the next level? Whether you’re dreaming of studying at a foreign university, landing an internship in another country, or service learning abroad, our office is here to make it happen! We’ll guide you every step of the way, connecting you with exciting opportunities, providing expert advice, and helping you navigate the world of independent student travel.

Types of Independent Student Travel

  • Academic Study – Enroll in a foreign university as an international student
  • Research Abroad – Conduct independent research under faculty supervision
  • Internships – Gain hands-on experience in an international work setting
  • Services Learning – Engage in global community service projects and earn clinical experience/credit
  • Professional Development – Attend international conferences or training programs

Who Can Participate?

  • Are you at least 18-years old and currently enrolled at Âé¶¹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú?
  • Will you have junior-level standing by the time of departure (Exceptions may be made by the Study Abroad Office based on academic standing and previous travel experience)?
  • Are you in good academic and disciplinary standing?
  • Have a clear academic, professional, or personal development goal for travel?

How to Get Started

  • Plan Ahead – Research opportunities and destinations that align with your goals.

  • with the Study Abroad Office – Students must register their travel with the Study Abroad Office at least three months before departure to ensure a smooth approval process.
  • Submit Required documents – Approval requires attending a planning meeting with the Study Abroad Office and completing all necessary forms, including travel details, proof of insurance, and any required agreements.
  • Stay Connected – Our team is here to assist you before, during, and after your journey. Keep in touch for safety updates and guidance.

Health, Safety & Risk Management

Your safety is our priority. All IST students must:

  • Register their travel with the Study Abroad Office and provide emergency contact details
  • Complete all required documentation including and .
  • Stay informed about visa requirements, local laws, and travel advisories. ()

Students are discouraged from traveling to countries/areas that are currently under a U.S. Department of State Travel Advisory Level 3. Travel to countries/areas under a Level 4 Advisory is prohibited. The risk of injury, detention, and death is significantly greater for many areas within these Travel Advisory Levels. Âé¶¹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú cannot fully assess those risks or provide services in the event of an in-country emergency.
