Anthropology

Anthropology studies all aspects of human culture past and present, including human biological and cultural diversity, human origins, and the emergence and development of cultural complexity.

Our students learn to analyze material and biological artifacts, preserve heritage, understand multicultural environments, trace human evolution, solve problems related to globalization, and apply forensic science to human remains.  Anthropology majors gain the varied skills needed to succeed in the increasingly complex societies and communities of the 21st century.  The anthropology major prepares students for diverse careers in business, law enforcement, healthcare, education, government, NGOs, museums, historical preservation, and more.  Anthropological skills and knowledge are in high demand today. According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, "Employment of anthropologists and archaeologists is expected to grow 8 percent from 2023 to 2033, faster than the average for all occupations" (US Department of Labor).

Our program focuses on three subfields of anthropology: biological anthropology, cultural anthropology and archaeology. Our faculty offer a variety of courses that cover topics such as forensic anthropology, violence and warfare, human evolution, historical archaeology, prehistoric archaeology, religion, Africa, food, paleopathology, medical anthropology and migration. The Biological Anthropology Lab offers students the chance for hands-on engagement with forensic and evolutionary science. The Archaeology Lab offers volunteer opportunities in historical archaeology. The student-run organization, Anthropology Student Union, provides opportunities to develop leadership skills and engage with anthropology through field trips, guest lectures, and other events.
