Surgical Pathology Grossing Techniques & Intraoperative Consultation

Program Overview

The Department of Pathology is pleased to announce the availability of a one-year, advanced training program in Surgical Pathology Grossing Techniques & Intraoperative Consultation. This program offers comprehensive, hands-on training in the gross examination of surgical specimens, including both biopsies and resections, as well as the processing and sectioning of frozen tissues for intraoperative consultation. Additionally, the trainee will be involved in cytology slides preparations during the rapid on-site evaluation in the procedure suite.

Although participation in structured educational didactic sessions is not required, trainees are strongly encouraged to attend and participate. These sessions are designed to enhance diagnostic proficiency, broaden medical knowledge, and promote professional development.

The program is conducted within the Wellstar MCG Health system, an academic healthcare network comprising:

  • A 478-bed adult medical center
  • The 154-bed Children’s Hospital of Georgia
  • The Georgia Cancer Center

With an annual caseload of approximately 16,000 surgical specimens and 1,500 frozen sections, the program ensures high-volume, diverse exposure to complex pathology. Training emphasizes graduated responsibility to develop technical competence and independent decision-making.

Our faculty includes board-certified pathologists with subspecialty expertise, supported by two certified Pathology Assistants who provide guidance in specimen processing and trainee instruction.

Located in Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú, Georgia—the state’s second-largest city—trainees will benefit from a vibrant cultural environment offering symphony, ballet, choral, and theater performances, along with abundant outdoor recreational opportunities. Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú is internationally recognized as the home of the Masters Golf Tournament.
