Mission, Goals, General Organization

Mission: To educate Neurological surgeons who demonstrate technical excellence, good judgment, a commitment to their patients, and to continued self improvement.

The Neurological Surgery Residency is designed with the following aims:

Develop neurosurgeons who possess a strong sense of integrity and display the highest level of professionalism

Develop neurosurgeons who practice evidenced based medicine, grounded in the foundations of best practice

Develop neurosurgeons who are actively engaged in the education of the next generation of physicians

Develop the scientific/research interests of the residents who will have successful scientific careers

Develop neurosurgeons who act as physician leaders throughout the environments in which they practice

Develop neurosurgeons dedicated to advancing patient safety, quality improvement, diversity and inclusivity, life-long learning, and personal well being
Develop neurosurgeons who actively participate in, and are leaders in the fields of functional, vascular/endovascular, tumor, spine, and pediatric neurosurgery

General Organization

The Neurosurgical Residency program includes seven years of training.  The resident will be introduced to the fundamentals of neurosurgical patient care during the first year of training.  The subsequent six years of training will include progressive autonomy in Neurosurgical patient care once competencies have been achieved in specified areas.  The resident will gain experience in basic neurosciences through rotations in Neurology, Neuropathology, Neuroradiology, Neurosurgical Anesthesia, Neuro Ophthalmology, and Neuro Oncology over the course of training.  The sixth year of training may be dedicated to research, to increase clinical experience in Neurosurgical subspecialties, or a combination of both.  In the final year of training, the resident will assume the role of Chief resident.
