Scope of Activities
As part of an academic medical center, medical education is central to everything the Department of Family and Community Medicine (DFCM) does. Our faculty provide classroom, small group, and clinical teaching to Medical College of Georgia students. The department is home to a six-week core clerkship rotation as well as an ACGME-accredited residency program which sponsors an osteopathic family and community medicine residency embedded in its allopathic program. The department also sponsors a rural family and community medicine residency, the last two years of which occur in Waycross, GA.
The DFCM offers a robust basket of clinical services to patients of all age groups. In addition to high-quality primary care, patients can undergo minor outpatient procedures, osteopathic manipulation, and acupuncture in the Family and Community Medicine Center. Our residents and faculty pride themselves on providing evidence-based care informed by clinical practice guidelines from national and international authorities.
Residents and faculty in the DFCM are committed to contributing to the medical literature by incorporating clinical research into the healthcare they provide. The type of research conducted is broad and a diverse range of topics are addressed. The primary thrust of the department鈥檚 overall research agenda is focused on chronic diseases, such as diabetes and hypertension, occurring in underserved communities.
