  1. Clinical training occurs in one hospital, The average volume is 30,000. We see children up to 21 years old. Our hospital is considered an urban teaching hospital. We are the only children鈥檚 emergency department that provides 24/7 services within a 150 mile radius. We are an ACS Level II pediatric trauma center. We operate out of 20 rooms in a designated area exclusively designed for pediatric patients. We are contiguous with the adult emergency department and can flex our space accordingly. Our dedicated nursing staff are all PALS certified and several with TNCC and EPNC certification.
  2. Our faculty have been dedicated and motivated over the years and are frequently recognized by the institution for their teaching excellence in both resident and student teaching. (Faculty)
  3. Fellows are not considered primary workforce and quickly function as mentors and teachers to junior learners. The volume of the emergency department allows for a pace conducive to learning and concentrating on the ill patient.
  4. There are a number of methods available to gain skill in low volume, critical procedures. Both EM and Peds trained physicians will have exposure to critically ill or injured adults or children dependent on training. Additionally, there are live pig labs, cadaver labs procedure workshops and access to our high fidelity simulation lab. Additional experience to pediatric fellows in the adult trauma and emergency medicine departments.
  5. We have a pediatric emergency medicine ultrasound fellowship being led by a trained pediatric emergency medicine fellowship trained physician. For those who are interested, ultrasound is easily accessible is becoming routine part of the care of pediatric patients in our emergency department.
  6. If you are trained in emergency medicine as your primary field, during your fellowship, you will be able to maintain your adult skills by serving as clinical faculty within the emergency department for one or two shifts a month.
  7. The department enjoys a robust research environment with primary areas of focus in resuscitation, ultrasound, disaster medicine and pre- hospital science. (Research) There are supportive research personnel and chair to help with fellow, faculty and resident success in research and board requirements.
  8. There are expectations for fellows to become excellent teachers upon completion of this program. There are a number of opportunities to perfect this skill in local and regional venues.
  9. Fellows have the opportunity to expand their interests through exposure to other fellowships and programs within the department . These include wilderness, ems, event and tactical medicine, clinical ultrasound. (Fellowships)
