Anesthesiology Research
ANES 5002

The student must have declared Anesthesiology their specialty and be actively participating in a project  with an Anesthesiology faculty member.

Category:  Non-Clinical
Eligible: ALL
Length: 2 or 4 weeks

Course Description: The ANES 5002 research elective is designed to give the student already participating in an active IRB project with an anesthesiology faculty member the opportunity to earn elective credit for their work on the project. The student is expected to participate in all phases of the project including preparation, publication, and presentation whenever feasible. In addition, the student will have several online modules to complete in advance for CITI training and research ethics as well as reading assignments and regular meetings with the faculty member.

Anesthesiology Off-Campus Externship
ANES 5003

This course requires application using VSLO or other arrangements made by the student. Off-Campus Elective-Form and supporting documents required.

Length: 2 or 4 weeks

Course Description: Clinical experience in Anesthesiology at an off campus hospital introducing student to the basic principles of anesthesiology; critical care medicine or pain management and development of basic knowledge for the perioperative management of the patient.

Pain Management
ANES 5008

Category: Clinical
Eligible: ALL
Length: 2 or 4 weeks

Course Description: The Pain Medicine elective is designed to teach the student to recognize commonly seen acute, chronic and cancer pain conditions and develop a basic understanding in pharmacological as well as interventional treatment modalities. At the end of the rotation, the student should be able to:

  1. Obtain a complete history and physical pertinent to the pain patient Present assessment and plan to a multidisciplinary pain team.
  2. Medical documentation pertinent to pain management. Learn basic injection techniques for musculoskeletal pain.
  3. Develop familiarity with fluoroscopically guided spine injection.
  4. Obtain understanding of acupuncture and various indications and techniques.
  5. Understand the different etiology and treatment strategies in acute, chronic and cancer pain.
  6.  Develop an understanding of the different subspecialty roles in the multidisciplinary pain clinic.

Anesthesiology Externship
ANES 5011

Must complete asepsis training prior to starting.

Length: 4 weeks

Course Description: This course is designed to introduce medical students to the basic principles and practice of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine. During the rotation students will rotate with faculty and residents on a daily basis. The locations will include the general operating room and other sub specialty areas. Assessment to include Faculty/Resident evaluation and Presentation.

Respiratory Care
ANES 5014

Category: Non-Clinical
Eligible: ALL
Length: 4 weeks

Course Description: This course helps students develop the skills necessary to treat patients in need of respiratory therapy. Emphasizing on non-invasive ventilation, and mechanical ventilation. Students will be more comfortable in the ICU following this rotation. The course involves three days a week in the classroom with combined lecture and interactive scenarios and the fourth day with the simulation lab. ACLS provided for a fee, but is optional time permitting.

Pediatric Anesthesia
ANES 5018

Category: Clinical
Eligible: Enrichment Only
Length: 2 weeks

Course Description: This elective course is designed to provide medical students in their third and fourth year of training an immersive experience in the field of Pediatric Anesthesiology. In this elective, students will work with Pediatric Anesthesiologist faculty members to evaluate and manage pediatric patients perioperatively. Students will be involved with the care of patients from preoperative assessment and preparation, into intraoperative care, and through to postoperative assessments. They will gain experience from seeing the care of a wide range of ages and patient conditions - both stable and critically ill. Students will have the opportunity to develop insight into the field of pediatric anesthesiology and to create relationships for mentorship and career development.
