Graduate Assistants (Externs)
The Graduate Assistant Program in Anesthesiology at the Medical College of Georgia was started in 1938 and has grown into a 15-member program that supports medical students by providing employment, patient care as a provider of BLS and ACLS, clinical and educational research, and recruitment into the specialty of anesthesiology.
The extern is primarily responsible to the anesthesiology faculty and resident staff on-call. The extern is a critical part of the anesthesia care team and is scheduled at approximately 40 hours per month during evening, weekend, and holiday hours. In addition to their responsibilities as the sole anesthesia technician for the OR and PACU during their shifts, the extern works throughout the 500-bed medical center in all anesthesia and critical care areas while also responding to all traumas and codes. The extern also serves as the OR laboratory technologist and the trauma technician handling all massive transfusions within the OR.
