About the Fellowship

The Advanced Perioperative Clinical Anesthesiology Fellowship is a post-graduate medical training clinical development program that is unique to our institution and is a non-ACGME accredited fellowship. The one-year program will offer advanced training in perioperative anesthesiology, training fellows to excel in clinical care and research throughout the entire perioperative pathway (pre-, intra-, and post-op). Fellowship experiences include participation in several multi-disciplinary clinical subspecialties including cardiothoracic, pediatric, critical care, obstetric, regional and neuro anesthesia. Fellows will also be trained in diagnostic POCUS and TEE and the anesthetic management of patients on mechanical circulatory support.

Clinical Experience

Trainees will be expected to work at the level of a senior anesthesiology resident at the start of the fellowship. They will, at the discretion of the program director, migrate to the role of junior attending as they gain proficiency in the operating room in key areas, including management of difficult airways, obstetric anesthesia, and cardiac anesthesia. This will account for 80% of the fellow鈥檚 effort for the year.

Rotations: Orthopedics, gynecology, major vascular, out-of-OR, POCUS/ultrasound, mechanical circulatory support, labor epidurals, regional blocks, pediatrics/congenital, neuroanesthesia/neurointerventional, TEE training, TAVR/mitral clips, dental.

Procedural requirements: 10 central lines, 20 arterial lines, 10 spinals, 10 epidurals, 10 peripheral nerve blocks.

Educational Experience & Teaching

Fellows must attend weekly departmental grand rounds, resident lectures associated with their rotation, and/or general didactics for senior residents. Trainees will also be expected to attend selected simulation labs and other hands-on training as directed by the program director. They will be expected to complete a quality improvement project; apply for and, if accepted, complete MCG's Teaching Development Seminar Series; and give at least one departmental grand rounds presentation. This will account for 10% of the fellow鈥檚 effort.

Teaching and supervision of residents and medical students will account for 10% of the fellow's effort.

Apply

Requirements for application include:

USMLE Steps 1, 2 (minimum score of 230 is preferred) and 3; a current curriculum vitae; three faculty letters of reference, one of which must be from the anesthesiology fellowship program director; and a personal statement describing the applicant鈥檚 interests and potential plans for the fellowship year.

Applicants must have 4 or more years of post-graduate medical training, at least 3 of which should be anesthesiology-specific training.

To apply, submit a complete, your CV, personal statement, letters of reference, and any attachments as a single PDF to Carol Dickerson at mcganes@augusta.edu.

Reach out to us for any questions regarding our fellowship program.
