There is a bidirectional intersection of the nation鈥檚 top two killers that scientists want to better understand and disrupt.
Cardiovascular disease and cancer often occur in the same people, potentially in large part because the two very common conditions share risk factors like obesity, which promotes inflammation, a key driver for both.
Medical College of Georgia scientists have mounting evidence that obesity also puts those with cancer at increased risk for cardiovascular disease and vice versa.
2024
David Kim successfully defended his PhD thesis entitled: "Identification of human-specific novel long non-coding RNA in neointima formation" on November 13, 2024 and will be awarded his PhD degree "With Distinction"! Dr. Kim will continue pursuing him MD at the Medical College of Georgia.

GRA Student Scholars 2023 Fourteen undergraduate students from Georgia spent their summer working alongside some of the most accomplished scientists in their fields. Three of those have been working in Dr. Neal Weintraub's lab. Montana Cagle, McCalyster Turner and Quinkivia Williams all from Paine College. 鈥淢y internship experience was amazing,鈥� reports Quinkivia Williams, a Paine College student who joined the lab of GRA Eminent Scholar Neal Weintraub at 麻豆官网首页入口. 鈥淲hile putting together presentations, I learned how important it is for engagement with the community to help reduce cancer disparities in different races.鈥�

Brandee Goo successfully defined her PhD thesis entitled: The role of histone deacetylase 9 (HDAC9) in adipose tissue dysfunction in obesity and aging" on May 31, 2023. Dr. Goo will continue pursuing her MD at the Medical College of Georgia.
